Recorded Live?
For a live album, especially a live album released on an independent label, the sound quality of this recording is amazing. This is because this album isn't exactly "live". The source of the show comes from Jane's Addiction's acoustic and electric performances from the January 26, 1987 at The Roxy in Los Angeles, CA. This recording was then taken to The Edge studios in Los Angeles for mixing. Jane's Addiction recorded overdub sessions that were mixed over the original recordings. In an interview, Eric Avery stated:
For the most part the rhythm section only went over technical fuckups or limitations. The cymbal mikes didn't pick up Steve's cymbals so he did a track of just cymbal crashes, for example. Perry and Dave did touch ups if i recall correctly. The audience mikes didn't properly pick up the crowd so we augmented them with a crowd recording from another, a Los Lobos show of all things, I think.
The original recordings have been traded among fans for years. They include a number of tracks that did not appear on this release, including the illusive Slow Divers. The quality of the original recording is not as clear as what you hear on this album, showing just how much studio work was done for this album.
Alternate Versions
There are several vinyl versions of this album. In addition to the traditional black vinyl, there is also a clear vinyl and a number of colored vinyl versions. The colors that can be found are red, blue, purple and green. All vinyl versions include the lyric sheet as a separate insert.
There are also four different CD versions. The difference of these versions is on the disc itself. Early pressings of this disc are on a mostly plain disc with the songs listed in black and have the track Pigs In Zen mislabeled as Pigs In Ten. This typo was fixed and the disc re-released. The next version is a blue disc with the tracks written in a semi-translucent yellow on top of the band's name. The final version has the album's cover printed in blue on the disc along with the track listings.
Album Artwork
The woman in the artwork by the lyrics for Jane Says is indeed Jane Bainter. The vinyl album's lyric sheet has three pictures of Jane, where the CD liner only contains a partial picture. The same image was used in the flyer for the Jane's Addiction show at the Whiskey a Go-Go in Hollywood, CA on March 6, 1987.
Vinyl Engravings
This is also the only known professional Jane's Addiction release that has engravings on vinyl pressings. The engravings are:
- Side 1: What made you look here?
- Side 2: It used to be secrets! I couldn't give them away.
