Porno For Pyros, formed in 1992, is the second band to rise from the ashes of Jane's Addiction. There are a number of stories regarding the origins of the band's name. One popular, but false, story is Perry found a misplaced advertisement for fireworks in a porn magazine. However, as alluded to in the song Porno For Pyros, the band's name comes from the 1992 L.A. riots following the Rodney King trial. Perry, while watching television coverage of the riots, proclaimed it was "like a porno for pyros".

Band Hiatus

With the start of the Jane's Addiction, the future of Porno For Pyros became uncertain. During 1997, the lines between Jane's Addiction and Porno For Pyros were heavily blurred. First was the band's collaboration with Flea and Dave Navarro on the song Hard Charger. Dave and Flea joined Porno For Pyros in a number of live appearances to help promote this song, including an appearance on the David Letterman Show and a very memorable performance at the Private Parts premier, where the five performed the seminal Jane's Addiction tune Mountain Song. The collaboration as so successful that Flea and Dave appeared at several other Porno For Pyros show. While Porno For Pyros performed two shows in the summer of 1998, and Peter, Steve and Mike Watt have continued to play together fairly regularly, the band ceased to be a regular thing once the Jane's Addiction relapse started.

Since that time, Porno For Pyros has had a few flirtations with their own resurrection. One of the most significant was the October 27th, 2001 Jane's Addiction show at the Hollywood Bowl in Los Angeles. This show saw the original lineup of Porno For Pyros perform together for the first time in over five years when Peter DiStefano joined Perry, Steve and then-current Jane's bassist Martyn LeNoble, on stage to perform an acoustic version of Pets.

The following year, Porno For Pyros recorded the song Streets On Fire for the movie Dark Blue. The song was written by Peter DiStefano and featured rapper Kurrupt. A planned movie soundtrack was scrapped when the movie bombed in theaters, and this song has continued to go without an official release ever since.

2004 was to see the first Porno For Pyros concert in six years. Peter and Perry were planning a one-off show, however the plan fell through due the show being timed too close to the birth of Perry's third son Hezron Wolfgang Farrell. While fans were excited at the thought of a P4P show, the show would not have included drummer Steve Perkins. Steve was working on his band The Panic Channel at the time, and following the breakup of Jane's Addiction in late 2003, not on particularly good terms with Perry.

Peter and Perry have continued to work together over the years. Peter and Perry have played together on the KIDZ stage of every Lollapalooza concert since 2004, and Peter contributed to the Satellite Party album Ultra Payloaded as both a writer and performer. He also joined them on stage during their Lollapalooza '07 performance. Satellite Party has also begun include P4P songs in their set. Peter DiStefano has also stated that there is an album's worth of Porno For Pyros song that have been written. Therefore it seems like it is more of a question when, and not if Porno For Pyros will reform.
